Madrid to Seville: train, plane or private car

Madrid to Seville is 530 km. There are three ways to cover it and, more than three speeds, they are three different days.

The high-speed train

Atocha to Santa Justa, with several departures an hour through most of the day. The journey itself is quick and comfortable.

What the timetable leaves out is the rest of the day: getting to Atocha, being there early enough for the security check and, once you step off in Seville, working out how to reach the hotel with your cases.

Flying

Two airports, with everything that involves at each end, and a transfer into Seville from a terminal that sits outside the city. It makes sense if you are connecting from an international flight. If the journey starts in Madrid, it rarely earns its place.

A private car

€679 for the vehicle, one way, up to four passengers with luggage. Tolls included, at a closed price agreed before you set off.

What changes is not how you get there. It is how you travel.

The car is yours

You are not sitting next to three hundred people. You can take a delicate call, spread papers across the seat beside you, sleep properly, or say nothing for five hours.

For anyone travelling on business that counts for more than anything else. Some conversations do not fit on a train.

You set the departure time

We leave when it suits you, not when a departure board says so. If your day works better leaving at six in the morning or at ten at night, that is the time.

Door to door

No station at the start and none at the end. No taxi rank after stepping off the train, no second fare, no queue with cases. Your luggage goes into the boot once and comes out once, at the destination.

You do not have to find your way around a city you do not know yet

This is the part people underestimate until they have lived it. Arriving at Santa Justa at nine at night, in a city you have never been to, deciding whether to walk or take a taxi, looking for the rank and trusting the driver will find the address in a quarter where half the streets are pedestrian.

Who books it

Not groups, as a rule. Most of these journeys are one or two people. Someone travelling for work who needs those hours to be useful. Someone who has decided the day is long enough already. Someone who has just arrived in Spain and would rather not start the trip finding their way with luggage.

The details

How long it takes. Around five and a quarter hours, with two short stops along the way to stretch your legs and get a coffee. That time is already counted in.

What it costs. €679 for the vehicle, one way, up to four passengers with luggage at the same price. Tolls included and confirmed before departure.

The road. South across La Mancha, up through the Despeñaperros pass into Andalusia and then the olive country of Jaén, which runs to the horizon. Córdoba sits almost halfway.

Stopping to see something. Possible, and quoted separately because it depends on how long you want and whether it means a detour. Córdoba is halfway and the Mezquita is fifteen minutes off the motorway. Ask when you book.

The car. A high-end electric or hybrid vehicle with reclining heated rear seats, temperature and music controlled from the back, Wi-Fi and chargers. Over five hours that stops being a detail.

The driver. A professional with a taxi licence. English-speaking if you ask when you book.

The return. Quoted separately. Ask when you book the outward leg and we will give you both figures at once.
