Segovia and Ávila in one day: can it be done?
Yes, and here is how the day divides. What you see of each city on a combined eight-and-a-half-hour trip, and when it is better to do them separately.
People ask this a lot and the short answer is yes. The longer answer is that it depends what you want from each city.
Segovia and Ávila are about 65 kilometres apart, and both a little over an hour from Madrid. Geographically the triangle works. What you have to accept is that you will see the essentials of each, not both at leisure.
How an eight-and-a-half-hour day divides

That is roughly two hours in Ávila and three and a half in Segovia. The split is not arbitrary: Ávila is enjoyed mostly from the outside, walking the ramparts, and that takes less time than Segovia’s set of sights.
What you see of each
In Ávila: a stretch of the medieval walls — the north curtain is the most photogenic — the cathedral built into the wall itself, and the city skyline from Los Cuatro Postes. You will miss the inside of the Basilica of San Vicente and the full Saint Teresa trail.
In Segovia: the Aqueduct from Plaza del Azoguejo, Calle Real up to Plaza Mayor, the cathedral from outside, and the Alcázar. With luck, time to climb the tower.
When not to combine them
If you are going to Segovia for the roast suckling pig, do not combine. A proper lunch in an asador takes two hours and dismantles the schedule.
If you are going to Ávila for Saint Teresa, likewise. The Teresian trail — convent, museum, birthplace — asks for a whole morning.
And if you are travelling with small children or someone with limited mobility, two hilltop old towns in one day is a lot. Better one, done well.
The numbers
The combined day runs eight and a half hours and costs €500 for the whole car, up to four passengers — €125 each if there are four of you.
For comparison: Segovia alone is 6.5 hours and €385, and Ávila alone is 6.5 hours and €390. Separately that is two days and €775; together, one day and €500.
The arithmetic favours combining. What decides it is not the money — it is how much of each city you want.
