Toledo and Consuegra: Don Quixote's windmills in one day
How to combine Toledo with the windmills of Consuegra in an eight-hour day, and why the afternoon light matters for the photographs.
The windmills of Consuegra are the image many people carry in their head when they think of La Mancha, even without knowing the name of the village. Twelve white mills in a row along a ridge, a castle beside them, and the plain stretching out in every direction.
They are 45 minutes from Toledo, which makes them the natural second stop of a day trip.

Three and a half hours in Toledo and an hour and a half in Consuegra. Enough for both: Consuegra works well in that time, because what you do is climb the ridge, walk the line of mills and take in the view.
Why the order matters
Toledo first, Consuegra second. This is not arbitrary.
Toledo in the morning avoids the worst of the summer heat and the crowds in the old town. And Consuegra in the afternoon gets side light, which is what makes the white mills stand out against the sky. At midday, with the sun overhead, the photograph falls flat.
In winter it gets tighter because darkness comes early, so everything shifts an hour earlier.
What else is at Consuegra
La Muela castle, twelfth century, sits right beside the mills and can be visited. From the top you see the whole Manchegan plain, a landscape that impresses by sheer scale.
Some mills can be visited inside, with the original grain-milling machinery. Worth the ten minutes.
And if you come between late October and early November, you will coincide with the saffron harvest and the Saffron Rose Festival. The fields fill with purple flowers and the village comes alive.

Eight hours and €520 for the whole car, up to four passengers — €130 each if there are four of you.
Toledo alone is six hours and €350. For €170 more and two extra hours you add a landscape with nothing in common with it.
Who it suits
Anyone who already knows they want Toledo but would like the day to have two distinct acts. It also works particularly well with children: after three hours of historic streets, running around a ridge full of windmills transforms the mood.
