Madrid to Bilbao
Bilbao reinvented itself around the Guggenheim: since 1997 Gehry’s titanium on the riverbank has turned an industrial city into a destination. Across the water is the Casco Viejo with its seven streets and its pintxo bars, and fifteen minutes downstream stands the Vizcaya Bridge — a World Heritage site, and the first transporter bridge ever built, working since 1893.
North on the A-1 to Burgos, then the AP-1 through Vitoria and down the Nervión valley to the estuary. The last hour turns green and the land closes in, which after four hours of tableland is a change you notice.
