Madrid to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
This is the traditional kilometre zero of the Camino Francés, a walled Basque town on the French side of the mountains. The first day out of here is the Route Napoléon over the pass to Roncesvalles: the hardest stage of the whole Camino, and the reason people want to start it rested.
North across the plateau into Navarre, and then the road climbs into the Pyrenees and crosses the border. It is the only route in this range that ends outside Spain.
We leave you at the door of your albergue or hotel with the packs out of the boot, at an hour that lets you sleep before the pass. Four walking together makes it about €167 each. The return leg is quoted separately.
