Madrid to O Cebreiro
O Cebreiro is the door into Galicia and a village of nine or ten houses at the top of the pass. Several of them are pallozas, the round stone dwellings with thatched roofs that people lived in up here for centuries, and the church of Santa María la Real is a 9th-century building, among the oldest standing on the whole Camino.
Across the plateau to El Bierzo and then the climb into Galicia: the last stretch is a narrow mountain road that winds up to 1,293 metres. We do it in daylight whenever the hour allows.
